I had a request to paint the blue guard shack at Siesta Key Beach... so of course, I had to do a little research! What a lovely way to spend a morning...

That's the red guard shack... I'll paint it too eventually :) I've already painted the yellow one - there is a green one too...

These folks were all doing yoga on the beach - now THAT's a way to start a day! wow! Exercising on the beach - that makes exercising bearable! ha!

Wow, can't believe I haven't posted since August 22nd! Where o where have I been?!?

Working! It's not for lack of painting - which is not something that I can always say ;)

Well, anyway - enough with the excuses... Since it's labor day, I thought I would share a couple of paintings with red,white and blue. These are a pair of Sandhill Cranes I painted in acrylic. They are birds commonly seen here in Florida - usually in pairs. They mate for life. There is a lovely couple that hang around the mall not far from me. They are very large birds - quite intimidating!

1001 Flamingos

I started painting little 4x4 flamingos a few weeks ago...

I painted four of them - and couldn't come up with names - so I named them Flamingo #1, Flamingo #2, Flamingo #3.... you get the idea. Not very original - but it works! So my husband commented on the name - and I said, "yeah, I'm going to paint a thousand of them - a thousand and one." He laughed... and my creative brain said "YES! That's a great idea!"

So, why not? I've got the rest of my life, right?

1001 Flamingos it is then...

Numbers 1-4 are already sold. These are only $14.99!! Soon I hope to give them there own little blog and post them as I do them... but until then, here is where they shall live :) Unless they want to come live with you! Here are numbers 5 though 8... I am on number 15 right now... have a long way to go - but I think that's the fun of it!

I finally got up from my chair (see last post) and figured out who the figure was that I had painted from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel... She is (drumroll....)

The Delphic Sybil.

huh?

Yeah, I didn't know either - so I did a little research. She is one of five "sibyls" in the Sistine. 'Sibyl' is word meaning Prophetess. The five depicted on the chapel ceiling are heralded as having prophesied about the death of Christ.

"Youngest and loveliest of the five sibyls, Delphica sits in a pose suggested by Jacopo della Quercia's Prudence which then still stood alongside the central basin of the Fonte Gaia in the principal square of Siena. She adjoins the Judith spandral, the symbol of Mary's triumph, and not unnaturally is developed from Michelangelo's early Madonna's... She shares with Greek tradition only her Apollonian beauty. In reality the meaning of the image is based, as in the other sibyls, on the little book by Filippo Barbieri dedicated to Sixtus IV, builder of the Sistine Chapel, that was surely available to Cardinal Vigerio and to Michelangelo. Barbieri tells us that Delphica, guided by the Holy Spirit, wrote many poems about the Incarnation, the Virgin Birth, the Passion, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. Not by accident, therefore, she is not only Madonna-like but placed directly below the Drunkenness of Noah which foreshadows the death of Christ as the planting of the vine does His daily resurrection in the Eucharist."

How fascinating!! I wish I could read that little book by Filippo Barbieri!!

I figured since Van Gogh and I spent some time together, I should maybe spend a little time with Michelangelo too.. Gotta keep things even you know :-)

This is a sketch from one of the figures in the Sistine Chapel. I have a giant book on Michelangelo - and there is a wonderful closeup of this beauty... I can't remember who she is right now and I'm too comfortable in my current chair to go into the next room and find out!
I am totally happy with the way she came out. I love this sketch journal paper... it's Canson Mix-Media "XL" if you are interested... I got the 9x12 but they make all diferent sizes.

P.S. I love being able to blog from my PHONE! I do hope the photographs are looking okay?

I have been processing some thoughts about my business - exactly what my business is - what I want it to be and where I'd like it to go... I guess I've been in the process of creating myself - then re-creating myself! and perhaps a few more times before it's all said and done. (do we ever really stop? I hope not!)

One thing I know for sure - without a somewhat clear vision of what you want and where you want to go - you'll NEVER get there... I know this from very real experience. You see, I am not a planner. I am not a goal-setter by nature (is anyone? i dont know). And so for most of my life - I've just kinda trotted along - sorta, kinda having a dream of where I'd like to go - but never really making a concrete action plan to get there. I fully believe in what being intentional can do for your life, for your dreams. I've seen this in action as well.

Right now I am still working on the 'somewhat clear vision'. Bear with me :)

Today I will invest my time in progress, growth and joy.

Fou-Roux

Van Gogh and I spent some valuable time together today...

and what we figured out is that acrylics are a very forgiving medium and quite addicting. I think I might be stuck on them for a while... though, not to worry - watercolor will always be my first love. Anyway, my second favorite artist in the world (Carol Carter) is visiting Sarasota in November to teach a watercolor class!! I can't even begin to tell you how excited this makes me!

The painting of Van Gogh is affectionately titled 'Fou-Roux' - taken from a nick name he was given... but you'll have to read "Lust for Life" - a novel about Van Gogh by Irving Stone to get the whole story. It's a wonderful read if your interested in Van Gogh. It was very defining for me personally and made me fall madly in love with his paintings. I think I might be a little looney like ol' Fou-Roux... but not quite as crazy as he ;)

I stumbled across a new book that looks equally as fascinating. I think I'm going to order it. It's called 'Leaving Van Gogh' by Carol Wallace.

Proud Little Flamingos

I am still playing with acrylics - and learning so much... it seems like the medium has finally 'clicked' for me and I am finally happy with the results of my efforts. But there is always more to learn - painting is a constant challenge - which I believe is one of the reasons I will never stop!
I painted these little flamingos on small 4x4 canvases.
I am quite proud of the little buggers!

Morning Pair

I have been going back through some photos of my watercolors and it really strikes me that a lot of my watercolors don't look like watercolors at all! I suppose it has to do with never having had a lesson. I just painted in my own way, figuring it out as I went along. This caused so many frustrations for me over the years (#%!!+<((%***!) but was totally worth it now that I look back.

If I had to give the biggest tip on what I've learned along the way? Use the best paper your money can buy. It makes the biggest difference, hands down. I remember the first time I painted on Arches 300lb paper - it's like everything in the world all of a sudden made sense!

Then use the best paint. It too makes a huge difference...

Paintbrushes? I don't know - maybe it's because I started out using inexpensive ones - I've tried some fairly expensive sable's and I just prefer my little squirrel hair brushes.

What's your best tip?

Here's my newest project - something I am very excited about!
I am opening up a little space inside a shop that has many vendors- There is everything from antiques to light fixtures to vintage clothing to art. This is so exciting for me because my interests and creativity are so varied - It allows me to branch outside of just producing watercolors - which I love! But I also love hunting for/finding/recreating an old piece of furniture into something wonderful and new.
This Friday is my move-in day - so I am little, well, nuts! If I am sparsely seen around here in blogger world, you'll know why :)
My little shop name is the icing on the cake! It's called (drum roll....) "Van Gogh's Room"! I thought this was so appropriate because number one - I am slightly obsessed with Van Gogh - number two - he was an artist, but I think also a latent decorator - here is his description of his little room in the Yellow House that he wrote to his brother:

My dear Theo,
At last I can send you a little sketch to give you at least an idea of the way the work is shaping up. For today I am all right again. My eyes are still tired but then I had a new idea in my head and here is the sketch of it. Another size 30 canvas. This time it's just simply my bedroom, only here colour is to do everything, and giving by its simplification a grander style to things, is to be suggestive here of rest or of sleep in general. In a word, looking at the picture ought to rest the brain, or rather the imagination.
The walls are pale violet. The floor is of red tiles.
The wood of the bed and chairs is the yellow of fresh butter, the sheets and pillows very light greenish-citron.
The coverlet scarlet. The window green.
The toilet table orange, the basin blue.
The doors lilac.
And that is all - there is nothing in this room with its closed shutters.
The squareness of the furniture again must express inviolable rest. Portraits on the walls, and a mirror and a towel and some clothes.
The frame - as there is no white in the picture - will be white.
This by way of revenge for the enforced rest I was obliged to take.
I shall work on it again all day, but you see how simple the conception is. The shadows and the cast shadows are suppressed; it is painted in free flat tints like the Japanese prints. It is going to be a contrast to, for instance, the Tarascon diligence and the night café.
I am not writing you a long letter, because tomorrow very early I am going to begin in the cool morning light, so as to finish my canvas.
How are the pains - don't forget to tell me about them.
I know that you will write one of these days.
I will make you sketches of the other rooms too someday.

I stayed up half the night listening to fireworks (not by choice, mind you) so I decided to paint. I made a good start on this beauty and was able to finish her this morning after a quick trip to the ocean to search for seashells... I found one perfect olive (i call them periwinkle's because my dad does too.)

I can't be more pleased with the way she looks - a real beauty. That old board was calling for her, methinks... Botticelli and Venus gave me a bit of inspiration...

2 Koi ~ Watercolor ~ 16x20

Without even thinking about it - I painted this last night with the perfect 4th color combo - Red, White and Blue! It doesn't exactly have an American theme - but, hey, there are plenty of koi ponds here too! Ha!
Red and Blue are my two favorite colors to put together - Especially a cool/hot combo like the two in this painting. I haven't painted koi in a long time - it was a nice relaxing painting - and a bigger one than I have painted in a while.

Pining for Proserpine

My internet presence will be sporadic this week - I have a dear friend coming to town for a visit. We'll be seeing all the fabulous things to see here in Sarasota, so I am sure to have some wonderful photographs to share.
Until I am back to 'normal' (what?) I was thinking of revisiting this painting again in a larger format soon - it's a Rossetti (love.) The title is 'Proserpine' (google for more info...)
I did a little teeny-tiny study of it a couple of years ago but would love to revisit it with some room on the paper...
The model here for Rossetti was Jane Morris - wife of William Morris. I believe Rossetti had quite an infatuation with her.. and I can understand why. I have always loved the paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites, but I am only beginning to study the artists/models/movement... it's absolutely fascinating.

Wow. I just went on a hunt for my original picture of the study I did on Proserpine - this was back in August of 2007. Four years ago. How did that happen? I was just starting to paint and blog seriously - so much has happened since that time. In many ways, I feel I was a better painter then - I wasn't so concerned about what the outcome might be - I was just painting. I am happy to report that after going around a few bends in life, I feel I am coming back to that point - painting for love and love only... or what is the point?

Here is my sweet little study of Proserpine:

Whew! It's a hot one y'all! Must be summer...
I don't think this fella is feeling the heat today - I think I'd like to be swimming alongside him, how 'bout you?!

He's a work in progress (obviously) The long skinny size of this is inspiring to me - I happened to have a frame this size.

Since it IS summer now - I will share one of my most favorite poems, from one of my most favorite poets, Mary Oliver... This is called 'The Summer Day':

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-

Everything that made that giant tree is already contained inside this tiny little seed. All it needs is some time, a little bit of sunshine and rain, and voilá!
Dot: This rock will be a tree?
Flik: Seed to tree. You've gotta work with me, here. Alright? Okay. Now, y-you might not feel like you can do much now, but that's just because, well, you're not a tree yet. You just have to give yourself some time. You're still a seed.

That is supposed to be me - if I were a woodland fairy looking type creature :) I am really happy with the colors - how the red hair stands out against all the green - and I do love the crooked trees... If you don't know already - I love trees. We have similar looking trees here in Florida... perhaps not so green, and maybe not quite so crooked...

...But that's what the imagination is for :)

That is the song that kept running through my mind while I was painting this... This was actually just going to be a doodle that I started this morning - but then I got inspired to keep painting... and, well, isn't she lovely?

The original painting was done by Rossetti in 1866. It was titled Monna Vanna (a vein woman).

I've changed mine up a little and added the bird - I dont know why - it just seemed like she should be holding a bird. He is paying about as much attention to her as she is to him... I think they are both too busy looking into mirrors at themselves! perhaps.

I dropped my hubby off at the airport today (he is on his merry way to England for work) and since I was already close, I stopped by a favorite little gettin' spot of mine called the 'Vintage Vagabond'. For less than five dollars, I came home with these two fabulous treasures:

The little book is called the 'Floral Birthday Book' - for each day of the year there is a small poem (or part of a poem) a flower and the name and meaning of the flower. Too fun. I love stuff like that. I also nabbed that cute little paper weight - it's a little cat holding a flower with an Express Mail cap on :)

So, would you like to know what your birthday says? Leave a comment with the date you'd like me to look up, and I will tell you... fun!

I also had a little time to work on Lady Clare - she is coming along nicely, I think...

As you can see - I am depicting Lady Clare in the dark... I don't think the poem says, so I am using my creative license. Its a full moon tonight, you know ;) I might just stay up long enough to see it!

Pre-Drawing... ready to paint!
I am doing a rendition of Lady Clare, which is a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson

Basically, Lady Clare is NOT Lady Clare - she is the nurse's daughter, but has grown up as the Lady Clare... So along comes Lord Ronald to marry her - he's definitely smitten - as he gifts her with a perfect lily-white doe.
When Lady Clare finds out she is not really who she thinks she is - she immediately goes her way to tell Lord Ronald the truth - she will not lie! So, off she goes to his crib with her sweet deer in hand... Wonder what Ronald does in the end? Then I reckon you'd better read the poem :)

JW Waterhouse did a lovely painting of Lady Clare... and his sketch is one of my favorites.

I am so happy about the way this came out... It took me forever to work out the initial drawing... but was worth it in the end. The only thing that bugs me about this painting is that I need a better way to apply masking fluid - it blobbed up on the little fish and they didnt come out quite like I wanted them to...

This is a very different painting for me - I've finally gotten around to reading/studying a book I've had for a long time: 'Dreamscapes, Myth and Magic' by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law... this painting is a result of that.
I have to say - I really enjoyed it. It's very time consuming - this little painting took hours... And it sucked the creative life right outta me... but in a good way :)
I think I might be exploring this type of painting for a while - who knows? I was always fascinated with this type of stuff when I was younger. I remember making houses for faeries in the playground using whatever I could find in nature...
Anyway - Painting that tree with all its twists/turns/faces was quite satisfying... and while I am not totally pleased with the woman, it's not so bad. She is not a fairy - she is me. and i am definitely courting lunacy :)
The title came because of the moon in the painting - in some cultures and superstitions letting the moonlight touch you while you are asleep can cause you to go mad - the terms 'lunacy' and 'lunatic' actually come from the Latin word for moon (Luna).
